Bhopal Gas Tragedy

The Bhopal gas tragedy is considered to be the world's worst industrial disaster. Resulting in the deaths of thousands, destroying the lives of millions and even exposing the future generation into a life suffering. A government affidavit in 2006 stated that the leak caused 558,125 injuries, including 38,478 temporary partial injuries and approximately 3,900 severely and permanently disabling injuries. The question still arises how did this happen? The methyl isocyanate (MIC) is a very deadly gas when mixed with water shows a very deadly exothermic reaction. What happened on the night of December 2nd is that the highly toxic substance made its way into and around the small towns located near the plant. The Indian government and local activists argue that slack management and deferred maintenance created a situation where routine pipe maintenance caused a backflow of water into a MIC tank, triggering the disaster. While experts say there should have been a blockage to stop such backflows as an emergency plan .If you are wondering why this was not thought of. Well, there was one according to the official report, but in reality, there was nothing set up to prevent it. Moreover, the workers did not have the proper training or proper equipment. When the experts came after the gas tragedy they found out that there was so much wrong going on in the factory. The training session which was 6 weeks long had been cut down to half,40%-50% staff was fired. The vent from which the gas came out of could be stoped. The Union Carbide Corporation (UCC) argued that it was not their fault that something like this happened. Finally, the had to pay compensation of $470 million in 1989. I

n June 2010, seven Indian nationals who were UCIL employees in 1984, including the former UCIL chairman, were convicted in Bhopal of causing death by negligence and sentenced to two years imprisonment and a fine of about $2,000 each, the maximum punishment allowed by Indian law.
